open enrollment
what is Open Enrollment?
Open enrollment is a specific period during which individuals can enroll in or make changes to their health insurance plans. This time frame typically occurs once a year, allowing people to review their current coverage, compare available options, and select plans that best meet their needs. During open enrollment, you can:
- Enroll in a new plan: Choose this option if you don’t currently have coverage or would like to switch plans. If you take no action, your current benefits will carry over — except for Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), which must be re-enrolled each year.
- Change existing coverage: Update your current plan based on changes in your health care needs or budget.
- Add dependents: Enroll family members who weren’t previously covered.
Outside of this period, you can usually only make changes due to qualifying life events, such as marriage, childbirth, or losing other coverage. Open enrollment helps ensure that everyone has the opportunity to secure appropriate health coverage for the upcoming year.
